ROADTRIPPIN' TO EUROPE'S MOST SOUTHEASTERN SURF MEKKA

Aktualisiert: 14. Apr. 2023

[Switzerland – Portugal] Eight friends, one bus, one goal: Sagres, Portugal. Read about our roadtrip to and our time spent in one of Europe’s greatest surf towns in the winter months. Spoiler alert: The beaches are yours and the wheather is amazing.

Girona

The first day on the road started at 6:30 in the morning. One friend of mine had to be carried out of bed as he had a pretty funny night before. We started in Liechtenstein and took the Swiss highway until Geneva where we entered France.

In the evening we have reached our first destination, Girona. We all did not know Girona and where impressed by the beautiful and lively city which might be often overseen by its neighboring city, Barcelona.

We have booked a beautiful AirBnb for all eight people only two hours before arrival (disclaimer: We travelled in February which is obviously not peak-travelling time in Spain). The price per person was about 25 Euros.

Sevilla

The next day we left Girona after having lunch and continued towards Sevilla. The drive was longer than expected but we reached Sevilla before dinner time. Sevilla is just incredibly beautiful and we have ended up having great food and we found a great amount of incredible second-hand shops.

Just stroll through the city and you will find great food and shops, especially if you do no only stick to the very city-center. Also here, we found a great AirBnb the same day as our arrival (same disclaimer as above).

Sagres

After having had lunch in Sevilla we have continued our journey to reach our final destination. The last hours felt very long, even if the ride was only about 4 hours. After leaving the highway, it took us about an hour on smaller, curvier streets through a lot of beautiful small coastal villages on the Portuguese West coast.

we have booked an AirBnb long in advance, even if the town was barely crowded and very low. There is one central supermarket and we have cooked often for ourselves.

Nevertheless, there are several good restaurants open even if it’s off season. Make sure to check out the different beaches in Sagres.

Reaching this quiet and beautiful place after this long, but funny road-trip is one of the best feelings, it’s like being in a movie.

There are several surf shops and the prices are incredibly good compared to e.g. France! We have spent 10 days in Sagres with small day trips, but mostly surfing.

The way back home

We were rather in a hurry to get back home, so we did it all in two days only. We went from Sagres to Bordeaux and then after a short night in the Ibis Budget hotel we went back home directly.

I would recommend taking more time and exploring different cities on the way back. There are many routes, just go with the flow :)
