[Switzerland – Hungary] The time you spend getting to your holiday destination is usually seen as a necessity. However, the train ride to Budapest turned out to be one of the best experiences of this vacation.
Getting together in Zurich
To start off our 4-day trip to Budapest, we gathered in Zurich, close to the main train station. The first point on our agenda was to get dinner, because we were aware of the long train ride in front of us.
The train ride
The six of us went into the train at the main station in Zurich and looked for our cabin. It was surprisingly convenient and comfortable.
The train left at 8 pm and we spend the next few hours playing cards, chatting, drinking a beer and just generally having a good time. The fun and at the same time annoying part was, that you couldn't really leave the cabin.
Don't be super tall because the beds are not made for giants.
If you did, you were standing in the corridor without any option to sit, except for the floor. So no matter how much your friends get on your nerves, there is no escape for no one.
The stay in Budapest
When we arrived in Budapest it was about noon and we were all happy to be here. The city is absolutely stunning when it comes to architecture, parks and the general look of the city.
It was summer, very warm and no clouds in the sky. What struck me particularly were the old buildings. All of them about 20 meter tall, build out of stone and just massive in their appearance.
The way back
After four days of sightseeing, eating and drinking, all of us were pretty much done.
We had no energy to do anything on the train when we went back to Zurich.
The beds in the train are much more comfortable when you are exhausted.
As expected, the train ride home was much quieter than the first one.
My verdict
To travel with the train over the night is very practical, since you arrive in the morning and therefore basically safe the money you'd have to spend for a hostel etc. And you really can enjoy the train ride.
Therefore, I highly recommend this option of getting to your holiday destination, in an Eco-friendly way!
