FROM GERMANY TO PORTUGAL BY RIDESHARE

Aktualisiert: 14. Apr. 2023

[Germany - Portugal] Explore the beautiful Algarve region in the south of Portugal with its unique nature, great waves and spirit and meet other surfers along the way! Instead of taking a flight to Faro or Lisbon, you can team up with fellow travellers going down south, travel slow and explore a few destinations in France and Spain along the way.

Any city in Germany

Before the trip, we re-activated our long-forgotten Facebook profiles and joined the group “Mitsurfbörse – die Mitfahrzentrale für Surfer”. In this group, people who surf and go down south to catch the best waves insert their trips and offer to give a ride in exchange for splitting gas and toll expenses. It is usually fairly easy to find rides to France, Spain and Portugal if you are somewhat flexible with your travel dates.

We joined a couple travelling to the same region as us in Portugal. After agreeing to meet in Freiburg (Germany), we were warmly welcomed into their bus and it wasn't long before interesting conversations began and the long hours in the car bonded us all together as a group.

Stops along the way

If you want to avoid paying high fees in tolls and at the same time see some of the beautiful small villages that the south of France has to offer, I recommend using smaller roads that do not require tolls.

We stopped for coffee and French croissants, and later on to do some Yoga in a small forest before making our way to our first stop in San Sebastián.

San Sebastían

We spent one night in San Sebastián to explore the city and recharge for the rest of the way ahead. Jumping into the ocean, enjoying some patatas bravas and vino tinto as well as some reggaetón at night is highly recommended here!

Aljezur, Portugal

Usually, you can agree with your rideshare on where they drop you off and they will often drive some extra kilometres to bring you to your desired destination. Once there, you will easily find people who are willing to give you a ride back home from the beach.

If you want to explore some other cities in the area of Lagos or Lisbon, the bus system works well and is fairly priced. Flixbus also operates there, if you want to go to destinations further away.
